How important is skin-to-skin contact 💕
It is said that humans actually produce emotions not in the brain, but rather in the skin and internal organs (such as the intestines).
Dr. Margaret Mead, a cultural anthropologist who studied tribes in New Guinea, conducted a study of tribes with babies and skin in close contact with tribes that were placed in baskets and not in close contact with skin. As a result, it was found that the former Arabesh tribe, who adheres to the skin, is very calm and has no conflict, while the free-spirited Mundugumor tribe, who does not adhere to the other skin, is aggressive and likes conflict. I did.
In the 1910s, a nursing home in the United States had an infant mortality rate of 90% per year, so despite improved nutrition and advanced medical care, one-third still died. I did. It is said that this was caused by the “untouched childcare” that was popular at the time, and that the stress of lack of skinship stopped the secretion of growth hormone.
In particular, many children who could not be spoiled due to lack of skinship from their parents when they were babies or children were not loved, and the lack of loved feeling led to problem behavior, leading to infants. Can be fatal.
The traditional Japanese child-rearing method that was mainstream before the war was child-rearing, which is closely related to mothers and children. In the daytime, I used a string to carry my baby on my back during housework, and at night I used to sleep with my baby in the shape of a river. When the mother was busy, it was common for her grandmother and daughter to hold her baby instead.
In the Edo period, there was also a child-rearing method called "Children's Anma" where the baby was massaged throughout the body. It stimulates the circulatory system, urinary system, immune system, nervous system, respiratory organs, and digestive organs of the stomach and intestines. In animals, it is said that mammals, in particular, clean the predecessor of babies.
However, Japan has changed now due to the Western-style childcare methods that have been introduced since the Meiji era after the war. The idea is that even if a baby cries, it should not be held immediately, and if left unattended to some extent, it will create an independent human being.
The image of babies crying is especially common in developed countries, but in fact, babies of Inuit (Eskimos) and African indigenous tribes who have lived traditionally since ancient times do not cry in vain. Inuit and African tribes that maintain traditional life are said to have some special problems or causes if their baby begins to cry.
Inuit parenting methods include wearing a diaper made of reindeer fur when the baby is born, wrapping it tightly with a blanket, and putting a piggyback on the back. This wrapping is said to resemble a womb-like sensation for a baby. In addition, cosleeping and skinship are common. This will provide the baby's psychological stability. The prewar Japanese childcare method is similar.
Babies grow in amniotic fluid before they are born. Because the amniotic fluid is as warm as the body temperature and the human body, which is mostly water, is in the water like amniotic fluid, the sensation of the baby's skin is hardly stimulated in the amniotic fluid. Babies have the same sensation of inflated comfort that we feel when we take a bath that is the same as our body temperature.
The baby will be very sticky to this paradise-like amniotic fluid and the wall of the mother's womb. When it is finally produced from the cozy mother's womb fluid, it is enveloped in a gas that is much cooler than body temperature. When this happens, the baby's skin sensation is stimulated and becomes more sensitive. From here, the baby's return to the womb begins. In other words, we seek a space like the uterus and warm human skin.
When a person does warm skinship, oxytocin is produced in the brain, which increases. Oxytocin has the function of relaxing the mind, deepening happiness and affection, and strengthening ties with people. In addition, oxytocin activates serotonin, which is called a happiness hormone, controls the action of noradrenaline (anxiety / fear), and keeps the balance of the mind stable. If a child is affected by oxytocin a lot when he is young, this serotonin-prone brain will become a brain that is likely to be released, and it seems that it will last for a lifetime.
Even so, in modern society, the number of double-income workers is increasing, and I think that there are many people who cannot afford the time and mind to interact with their children. However, children are unexpectedly smart, and when they have no parents, they have good relationships with their children, such as how to treat their teachers at the nursery school and how to treat their grandparents. And since I want to give my mom and dad a lot, no matter how short the contact time is, I should cherish the attachment relationship between parents and children by giving them a skinship.
There is a negative word "hug" for some time, but the desire to be hugged is instinctual, and the future is due to not being hugged at an early age rather than actually being hugged. Instinctual anxiety is much more serious.
Today, when brain-raising is the focus and priority, all mammals are skin-to-skin skin-shipping. When the skin touches the skin, attachment is created, the bond between the parent and child is deepened, and the child grows up with a sense of security.
The root of children's happiness is made from skinship. That may be true for us as adults.
